About

Dai Banna SIL offers a libre, open font family tailored to the New Tai Lue (Xishuangbanna Dai) script, used by roughly 300,000 speakers in Yunnan, China. It translates a script with deep roots into a calm, bookish serif, with moderate stroke contrast, balanced proportions, and spacing that keeps dense marks and stacked forms legible over long reading sessions. The script itself is a simplified evolution of the historic Tai Tham (Old Tai Lue) writing system, and that heritage comes through in the careful shaping of curves and joins. Use it when you want respectful, readable typography for textbooks, literacy materials, or documentation; skip it for loud branding, splashy festival posters, or playful packaging where you need more visual drama.

Best For:
bilingual educational layouts
language-learning print and PDFs
cultural or linguistic reports
script-focused interface mockups

Not Ideal For:
expressive commercial branding
festival or nightlife posters
highly stylized logo marks
playful kids packaging

Perfect for body text, editorial, and headline, with a classic and serif style.
