About

Chilanka captures the cadence of everyday handwriting without leaning into calligraphic drama. Its strokes hold uniform width from start to finish — rounded ends, no sharp corners — evoking a thin felt-tip or ballpoint rather than a brush or nib. The curves stay true to Malayalam script’s flowing aesthetic, and because the glyphs sit on a consistent horizontal baseline, the font holds up in short body text, not only display headlines. Latin glyphs introduced in 2016 make it genuinely bilingual in use. It lands best in children’s publishing, hand-feel invitation layouts, and informal comic strip lettering. Where it loses ground: dense long-form editorial, any project requiring typographic authority, or corporate identity work where neutrality and precision matter more than warmth.

Best For:
– invitation card design
– comic strip lettering
– children’s book layouts
– informal social media captions

Not Ideal For:
– long-form body text
– corporate identity design
– formal editorial work

Perfect for editorial, invitation, and kids, with a creative and handwritten style.
